Emergence client, Fredericton, New Brunswick-based Chinova Bioworks, has received its designation as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) by an independent expert panel.
This designation is based on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements.
The GRAS determination applies exclusively to Chinova Bioworks’ mushroom chitosan preservative, and for specific uses that Chinova has designated.
“Having our Chiber™ mushroom chitosan ingredient recognized as GRAS allows us to commercialize our natural solution in the U.S. market for the first time,” Chinova CEO Natasha Dhayagude told us.
According to Dhayagude, “[GRAS status] demonstrates Chinova’s commitment to the highest standards of quality and safety of our ingredient.”
“This is an important milestone for us and an exciting development for our customers who are eager to replace artificial preservatives and make their foods and beverages healthy and clean label.”
Chinova’s Chiber™ is an antimicrobial food and beverage preservative made from a fiber extracted from mushrooms, called chitosan. It has the advantages of broad-spectrum antimicrobial effectiveness while being a healthy natural fiber.
