The workshop, held on May 08, was designed specifically to help improve IP literacy among bioscience sector entrepreneurs.

The session was presented by Noel Courage and Tony Orsi, Toronto-based Partners at leading Canadian IP law firm, Bereskin & Parr LLP Intellectual Property Law.

The focus of the workshop was on the elements critical to formulating an intellectual property strategy for startups and early-stage ventures.

During their presentation, entitled “Building a Strong Intellectual Property Foundation for Your Startup“, the presenters focused on patents, and how they can be used as the foundation of an IP strategy, to build an IP portfolio, and create value.

The workshop was followed by a Q&A session, company networking, and one-on-one meetings between the presenters and participating ventures.

According to Emergence Director, Martin Yuill, “one of the pillars of the Emergence incubator is to provide Canadian life science innovators and entrepreneurs with timely access to top-tier professional advisory services.”

Early-stage, startup and scale-up ventures alike all benefit from professional guidance to make the right decisions at every stage of their company’s growth, build successful export companies, and compete successfully in the global economy.

“In today’s hyper-competitive global economy understanding the fundamentals of IP protection and having an IP strategy are critical to protecting a venture’s value proposition, helping define a company’s key points of differentiation, and offering protection to a startup’s competitive advantage,” Yuill says.
