We previously announced the formation of a new partnership program to support innovators and entrepreneurs. With this program, Emergence has partnered with leading providers of professional financial, legal and IP services to support our clients’ growth. Known as the Professional Service Provider Program – or PSP2 – this new initiative will further strengthen the support offered by Emergence to our client companies.
In addition, under the Expert Education Program (EEP), our PSP2 Partners will deliver a range of value-adding educational roundtables, workshops and seminars to enhance the business skills of Canada’s bioscience and food entrepreneurs.
The first event in the EEP program will be offered in collaboration with our IP partner, Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG).
You, and representatives from your company, are invited to attend a workshop with BLG to learn about “Using Patents as Business Tools“.
- DATE AND TIME: Thursday, 15 December 2016, 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM AST (a light networking lunch will follow).
- LOCATION: The Holman Grand Hotel, 123 Grafton Street-3rd Floor , Dunes Beach Room-3rd Floor , Charlottetown, PE. To register, click here!

In addition, personal “one-to-one” follow-up meetings with our presenter, Jennifer Raoul, can be booked for the afternoon of December 15.
Why you should attend: Intellectual property (IP) is one of the most valuable assets for any venture – start-up or established SME. Having an effective IP strategy in place is essential.
This session will examine techniques to use patents as a business tool to create value for your company, while avoiding common pitfalls. Join us to learn how an effective IP strategy goes well beyond filing a patent application and can be used to protect market share, build shareholder value, and put your business at the head of the line for future investment.
Some of the topics to be addressed will include:
- Patents vs. other forms of protection (risks vs. benefits)
- Patentability vs. Freedom–to–Operate
- Conducting searches to assess market/patent position before investing too much
- Use of confidentiality agreements/non-disclosure agreements
- Inventorship vs. Ownership
- IP protections in company agreements
- Preparing for and conducting IP due diligence
- Record keeping
- Costs and filing strategies
- Assignments vs Licenses
