Welcome to new Emergence Client: SomaDetect

October 26, 2016

We are happy to extend a warm “EmerGence welcome” to our newest client, SomaDetect. Welcome to Canada’s bioscience incubation program!

soma1SomaDetect is an agro-tech startup working on problems of animal wellness in the dairy industry.

SomaDetect’s mission is to help dairy farmers to get the highest quality milk possible by providing information of herd health and milk quality.

SomaDetect’s patented technology is aimed at producing instantaneous results within the barn, allowing farmers to rapidly spot infection and to immediately treat cows who are sick.

This will prevent contamination of the bulk tank, and maximize the quality of the milk.

Overall, SomaDetect’s goal is to provide better information for farmers, better milk for consumers, and better lives for cows.

SomaDetect’s solution uses optical, laser technology for rapid, on-site determination of somatic cell counts and fat content in milk.

With the SomaDetect system, few or no manipulations will be required, and real-time, continuous measurements become possible by integrating the device into the tubing of existing milking systems.

Their goal is to provide farmers with somatic cell and fat content measurements, allowing farmers to make better decision with respect to dairy-production procedures.

Furthermore, SomaDetect aims to make a suite of data products available that has never before existed. This includes detailed daily, weekly, and monthly reports of individual to dairy farmers. It also includes spatial and temporal trend analysis of dairy quality.

The information provided by SomaDetect products could then be used:

  • to assess cows before they enter the herd,
  • for cows who recently gave birth to confirm health before adding first milk to the bulk tank
  • for lactating cows whenever the producer suspects mastitis or to simply assess health status
  • to confirm milk quality, and
  • continuously, for careful measurement of herd health and milk quality via trend analysis.

SomaDetect is all about providing farmers with the quantitative and qualitative feedback they need to improve practices and ultimately cow health. Overtime, this will allow farmers and dairy producers to better monitor and respond to herd health concerns, and ultimately deliver better-quality milk to the dairy industry and to consumers.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (2008) estimates that 17% of cows used for their milk suffer from mastitis at any given time, and that this disease is one of the leading causes of death in adult cows in the dairy industry. Overall, mastitis costs the USA dairy industry more than $1 billion annually.

SomaDetect has a solution designed to help dairy farmers diagnose early, treat efficiently, and significantly reduce the costs of mastitis within their herds. Sound interesting? Click here to learn more!
