In an article titled “Algae in action: Noblegen uses ‘facilitated expression’ to create designer oils, proteins, nutraceuticals via microbial fermentation” Food Navigator writes: “We’re still just scratching the surface when it comes to unlocking the potential of microbial fermentation to manufacture food ingredients, says Canadian bioengineering firm Noblegen, which is developing a new breed of designer oils, proteins, and nutraceuticals from an ancient single celled micro-organism called Euglena”.

The article quotes Noblegen co-founder Dr. Andressa Lacerda, who explains that Noblegen uses a proprietary technique called “facilitated expression” to coax the Euglena micro-organism into producing everything from cost-effective palm oil replacements, high-oleic cookie goals and omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, to complete proteins with all nine essential amino acids.
Lacerda says that Noblegen can “do this at volumes and prices that will make sense to large consumer packaged goods companies“.
“This isn’t about making niche ingredients for niche markets,” she tells Food Navigator.
Lacerda believes that products with Noblegen ingredients could be on the market within 12 months.
