Published by William Reed, Food Navigator is a leading source of online news source for the food industry. The publication offers “daily news, analysis, online and face to face events, podcasts and video coverage of the issues and stories impacting decision makers in the food and beverage industry“.
In an article titled “Food & beverage entrepreneurs to watch in 2018: From Finless Foods to Hakuna Banana” Food Navigator identifies what it calls “the latest round of entrepreneurs to watch in the US food and beverage market [who] are flogging everything from basil seed beverages to designer proteins, banana-fueled desserts and farmer’s cheese protein bars”.
Food Navigator writes: “We’re still just scratching the surface when it comes to unlocking the potential of microbial fermentation to manufacture food ingredients, says Canadian bioengineering firm Noblegen, which is developing a new breed of designer oils, proteins, and nutraceuticals from an ancient single celled micro-organism called Euglena”.

The article quotes Noblegen co-founder Dr. Andressa Lacerda, who explains that Noblegen uses a proprietary technique called “facilitated expression” to coax the Euglena micro-organism into producing everything from cost-effective palm oil replacements, high-oleic cookie goals and omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, to complete proteins with all nine essential amino acids.
Lacerda says that Noblegen can “do this at volumes and prices that will make sense to large consumer packaged goods companies“.
“This isn’t about making niche ingredients for niche markets,” she tells Food Navigator.
