Emergence client, Ontario and Moncton, New Brunswick-based Tieös Pharmaceuticals has been announced as a Finalist in the 2018 Synapse Life Science Competition, a program of the Innovation Factory at McMaster Innovation Park in Hamilton, Ontario. Congratulations!

The Synapse Life Science Competition is designed to “help move innovative Life Science products and services out of the lab and into the market, by pairing up Life Science Innovators with business and entrepreneurship students”.
The competition culminates in March 2018 with a final pitch presentation and showcase event, at which the top three teams compete for a Grand Prize consisting of a cash award and in-kind services.

Tieös Pharmaceuticals is a next-generation biotech company focused on cancer metabolic therapies.
In announcing the finalists, the organizers say: “Tieös Pharmaceuticals is a privately held pre-clinical stage biotech company, with the goal of creating novel small molecule inhibitors which target the unique metabolic characteristics of cancer cells. Rather than categorizing cancer as a class of vast genetic mutations that differ on a case-by-case basis, Tieös views cancer’s origin from a metabolic perspective. Tieös believes that current therapies focused on genetic aberrations are treating symptoms of cancer rather than addressing the root cause.
“With the use of advanced artificial intelligence and 3D in silico modelling, Tieös has developed lead polypharmocological compounds which will each target multiple metabolic pathways simultaneously – creating synergies and reducing toxicity. Through a proprietary weighting of cancer specific metabolic proteins, Tieös is now synthesizing and beginning proof-of-concept in vivo testing of their lead candidate compounds.
Ties will be working with Student Innovators Alice Guan, BHSc. Biomedical Discovery and Commercialization and Tanya Miladinovic, Medical Sciences (Pathology & Molecular Medicine).
Alice Guan
Alice (right) is a senior undergraduate student in Biomedical Discovery and Commercialization, where she is continuously immersed in benchside science, entrepreneurial planning, and a collaboration thereof. Having worked at two biochemistry research positions and three business development positions, Alice knows that her passions, which appear to be on opposite sides of the spectrum, can truly be integrated into one supportive role. Several academic projects in the subject areas involving drug discovery and business consulting further solidified her expertise, including troubleshooting laboratory results, analyzing financial status, and identifying marketable opportunities.
Tanya Miladinovic
Tanya (left) is a a senior PhD Candidate in the Medical Sciences Program at McMaster University with a MSc in Behavioural Neuroscience and HBA in Psychology and Research Methods. Her research is focused on breast cancer-induced bone pain, with specific interest in the molecular mechanisms which may be involved in initiating and maintaining this pain state. She describes herself as an expert in statistical analysis, with six years of experience as a Teaching Assistant and Tutor for introductory and advance undergraduate statistics courses.
